What is the Gospel?

The word “gospel” simply means good news. It is the best news the world has ever heard: God Himself has acted, in Jesus Christ, to save sinners. The apostle Paul summarized it in one sentence:

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (NKJV)

To understand why this is such good news, we need to see five things the Bible makes plain.

1. We have a problem: sin

God is holy, righteous, and the Creator of all things. Every one of us, however, has fallen short of His perfect standard. Sin is not only the wrong things we do; it is a heart turned away from the God who made us.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Sin separates us from a holy God, and its consequence is death — not only physical death, but eternal separation from Him. No amount of good behavior can bridge that gap, because even our very best falls short of His holiness.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

2. God loves us anyway

Here is the wonder of the gospel: God did not leave us in our sin. In His great mercy, He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners — not because we deserved it, but because He loves us.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (NKJV)

3. Jesus died and rose in our place

Jesus Christ lived the sinless life we could not live. Then, on the cross, He willingly took the punishment our sins deserved. He was buried, and on the third day He rose bodily from the grave — conquering sin and death forever. The resurrection is God's public declaration that the price has been paid in full and that Jesus is Lord.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

4. Salvation is a free gift, received by faith

Because Christ has done everything, there is nothing left for us to earn. Salvation is not a reward for the good we do; it is God's free gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV)

To receive this gift, the Bible calls us to repent — to turn from our sin — and to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ:

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9 (NKJV)

5. New life in the power of the Holy Spirit

The gospel does not end with forgiveness — it opens the door to a Spirit-filled life. On the day of Pentecost, Peter told the crowd exactly how to respond to the good news:

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” — Acts 2:38–39 (NKJV)

Repent, be baptized in water, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit — that promise is for you today, just as it was then. Jesus baptizes believers in the Holy Spirit, giving power to live a holy life and to be His witness:

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

How will you respond?

The gospel is not merely information; it is an invitation. Jesus turns away no one who comes to Him. If you have never trusted in Him, you can do so today — right where you are, in simple, sincere prayer.
