Understand the Good News

The Gospel announces what God has done through Jesus Christ. It begins with God’s holiness and love, rather than our ability to improve ourselves. Romans 3 places every person under sin: religious knowledge or good intentions do not remove our need for mercy. Sin includes our actions, attitudes and refusal to love God and our neighbor. Its consequences are serious; Romans 6:23 contrasts sin’s wages with God’s gift of life in Christ.

God’s love is shown in the giving of His Son. John 3:16 belongs to Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus about new birth and trust in the Son. The invitation is to believe in Christ, rather than to purchase favor or achieve a religious score. God’s love does not make sin harmless; it provides the Savior we need.

Paul summarizes the good news in 1 Corinthians 15: Christ died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day. His death was for sinners. His burial affirms that He truly died. His resurrection is God’s victory over death, not simply an inspiring symbol. Read the chapter beyond its opening summary to see how resurrection shapes Christian hope.

Jesus calls people to repentance and faith. Repentance is turning toward God and away from sin; faith rests in Jesus Christ and His saving work. Neither a prayer formula nor membership in a website saves us. Ephesians 2:8–10 holds together salvation by grace through faith and the good works that follow. We do not earn salvation through those works.

Through faith in Jesus Christ we receive forgiveness, new life and eternal life, and begin a life of following Him. Believers continue learning, confessing sin, receiving correction and loving others. Discipleship grows from grace; it is not a promise of wealth, freedom from suffering or superiority over other people.

Six Foundational Scriptures of Salvation

Read the core promises of the Gospel directly from God’s Word and see how God saves sinners by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

01 · Universal Need Romans 3:23 ↗

All Have Sinned

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

— Romans 3:23

Every human being needs God’s saving mercy because sin separates us from His perfect holiness.

02 · God’s Love Romans 5:8 ↗

Christ Died for Us

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

— Romans 5:8

God did not wait for us to make ourselves righteous; He sent His Son to die in our place.

03 · The Free Gift Romans 6:23 ↗

Eternal Life in Christ

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

— Romans 6:23

While sin earns spiritual and physical death, eternal life is given freely by God in Jesus Christ.

04 · Cross & Empty Tomb 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ↗

Died, Buried & Risen

“that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,”

— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4

The historical death and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ are the unshakeable foundation of the Gospel.

05 · Grace Alone Ephesians 2:8–9 ↗

Saved Through Faith

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

— Ephesians 2:8–9

Salvation is received by faith in Jesus Christ alone — never earned by human works or rituals.

06 · Saving Faith Romans 10:9 ↗

Confess & Believe

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

— Romans 10:9

Everyone who turns to Jesus Christ in sincere repentance and faith receives forgiveness and salvation.

Pause & Consider

Reflect

What do Romans 3:23 and 6:23 reveal about humanity’s need?
How does Christ’s death and resurrection change the basis of hope?
Where are you tempted to rely on your achievements rather than God’s grace?
