Greatness through service
Consider Jesus’ response to ambition and His call to serve.
Understand
Read Mark 10:35–45 in its setting as Jesus approaches Jerusalem. James and John ask for positions of honor. The other disciples respond, and Jesus contrasts the way rulers exercise authority with service among His followers. Attend to His own example at the end of the passage: His saving mission grounds the call to service.
Christian responsibility is not a claim to control another person's conscience or make every decision for them. Service can involve taking responsibility, sharing useful skills, listening to correction and treating people with dignity. Leadership needs accountability. A title, income or public reputation cannot substitute for love and truthful conduct.
Examine a situation in which you want credit or control. What would a useful act of service look like without hiding necessary boundaries? Serving others does not require enabling abuse or ignoring your own responsibilities. Read Jesus' words in context, pray honestly about ambition and ask a trusted person for feedback. The application follows grace; it does not earn acceptance with God.
