Kindness in the household
Consider Paul’s call to compassion, patience and thankfulness in Christian community.
Understand
Read Colossians 3:12–17 after the preceding verses about the new life in Christ. Paul writes to the Christian community about compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness and love. Notice how peace, thankfulness and attention to Christ's word also belong to the passage.
These instructions can shape a household conversation, but they should not be used to demand silence about harm. Forgiveness does not make abuse acceptable or remove the need for protection and accountability. A child should seek trusted adult help with something unsafe. Adults should respond responsibly and seek appropriate support rather than turning a study into pressure to reconcile immediately.
Choose one ordinary interaction to practice kindness: listening to a concern, acknowledging a mistake or sharing a reasonable task. Invite willing participants to suggest an action without blaming one person for the household's difficulties. Different abilities and circumstances need care. Good works follow God's grace; they are not a way to purchase salvation or claim superiority.
Reflect
Which qualities does Paul connect?
How could love guide a specific interaction?
What would patient, safe accountability look like?
Live
Choose a practical kind action and allow others to respond freely. Seek help where safety or serious conflict requires it.
